Book Talk: Trifecta by James Pope

August 27, 2018

Passion brings with it its fair share of pleasure… but if these are of the forbidden variety, then what are their consequences? James Pope shows us what such pursuits can bring, when they go against the norms of society, yet are propelled by the drives of lost souls seeking something more than what their routines can offer. The taboo becomes long-sought-for spice for those with insatiable desires, slaking yet anguished at the banal landscape of their existences. Renewed meaning, the thrill of secret acts, and the fear of being discovered — this is the “Trifecta” that awaits readers.

A wife explores her true sexuality and in the process deceives her husband. Then, the wife’s mother enters a relationship with her son-in-law. Each now has secrets that, if revealed, will undoubtedly ruin their marriage and their reputations. To further complicate matters, the wife’s college-age daughter receives tender guidance from her step-father to achieve fulfillment as a woman.

All this amidst a background of big business and high society, the kind of environment that would react most harshly to any whiff of scandal. What results is a tangled web of lies and passions, and all those involved forced on a delicate tightrope act. Their desires take them to new highs, but who will plummet first? And what waits for them after the fall?

Is this family dysfunctional? Or are these unspoken social issues that take place in modern society, going by unacknowledged due to established norms? Yet — dishonesty aside — are their acts reprehensible, are they guilty for indulging in these temptations?

“‘Trifecta’ is a combination of personal experiences and my creativity,” Pope says. An Iowa farm boy at heart, Pope, has seemingly strayed far away from the family ranch with this page-turner of his. The subject “Trifecta” explores is the exact opposite of the idyllic all-American image of family life. But perhaps that wholesome image casts a shadow that resembles Pope’s narrative more than a little bit. These drives and acts go against the values and norms society takes for granted, and that may be why they entice. Particularly in the case of individuals who haven’t been served quite well by said values and norms.

So Pope shows readers what lies beyond the ordinary, and what drives people to indulge in the forbidden. He humanizes them without pulling his punches. And with these personalities as his protagonists, he shows how the norms and values of the society can become a threat, a proverbial Sword of Damocles, hanging over the heads of those who are pursuing their victim-less passions.

But what if their desires actually do end up hurting someone? Then that’s something else. Readers will see if the family reaches that point. If they will disintegrate because of their pleasures, even when their secrets stay safe. Will it reach that point, with the tightrope act coming to an end? Or will this sexual circus go on? More sensual surprises await in the pages of “Trifecta.”
