Book Talk: Letters to My Father by Dvora River

Book Talk: Business Chameleon: A Practical Guide to Success for Managers by László Károlyi_The BookWalker

Simple and easy to grasp, Letters to My Father is a collection of personal letters addressed to the Heavenly Father by one woman who struggled to win over her demons.

Honest and unpretentious, Dvora River does not sugarcoat, nor does she hide the weaknesses that drive her to her knees. Instead, she writes them down, verbalizing her challenges, her fears, her self-doubt in her journal. River was sexually abused when she was thirteen. It lasted until she was fifteen, but its life-changing effects continue to persist. Despite seeking counsel from traditional routes, like social workers and psychiatrists, nothing gave River more than temporary relief. What she wanted—what she needed—was real, lasting peace.

One day, River found herself in front of a Christian counselor and immediately knew she had been blessed. The counselor did not just let the author express herself. More importantly, she saw River for who she was and helped her untangle herself from the emotional, mental, and spiritual mess she was in.

Letters to My Father is about River’s journey. Her journal entries piece together a lifetime of struggles, defeat, and despair. At the same time, her words breathe hope, acceptance, and faith. Through her book, River brings sunshine to people who may be in dark and gloomy places where she once was.

Journaling has been a huge part of the author’s journey. She knew from the beginning that “healing doesn’t come in a week, or a month, or even years. Healing occurs in His timing, not ours.” The author has seven years of relevant journal entries. Over the years, her journals have borne witness to the author’s deepening relationship with her Father in heaven and the peace that comes from such a relationship.

Father, today I’ve identified my fears. I fear being out of control. I fear letting people get close to me. I fear failure. I fear my insecurity. I don’t want my fears exposed. The more I talk to my counselor; the more my fears are exposed. It is uncomfortable but as uncomfortable as it is, I do want to learn about myself and see me through your eyes. I must work through my anxiety and face the things I fear. Father, thy will be done.

Readers, Christians, and non-Christians alike, will find Dvora River’s Letters to My Father stirring and enriching. It is a testament to humility and faith. It is one woman’s humble work that has the potential to make a life-changing impact in countless lives. What seems to be a bit melancholic premise at first turns to be an inspiring, comforting read. Refreshing, a source of inspiration. Letters to My Father shouldn’t be missed.
