Book Talk: One Groovy Summer: A Summer Adventure from 1968 by Rocky Gregory
The 1960s centered on the youth—the burgeoning number of young adults; its unprecedented growth leads to the period of awakening—that paved the way for freedom of expression, the Sexual Revolution, liberalities, and the Hippie Movement.
Readers who have seen the bygone years will have the chance to reminisce the good ole days of the Counterculture Movement as depicted in Rocky's semi-autobiographical novel, One Groovy Summer—kick off the story of Will Hinklemeyer, a young man who could not wait to finish off his senior year in high school. Despite the fear of being drafted into the Vietnam War, Will and his good friend Skip, look forward to having a groovy summer adventure of fun and excitement.
So began Will and Skip with their traveling from one state to another: Virginia, Maryland, Ohio interacting with the local people--a manifestation of the 'Freewheeling Counterculture Movement.' Their adventure headstart from going to pubs, partying all night long, consuming much alcohol, dancing, going to concerts, engaging in multiple sexual liaisons.
While enjoying his freedom away from home, Will gets a stint at a fancy resort bar and a hands-on experience on the way of life--to live, work and scrimp to save up to go to college. But the turning point is how he deals with his emotions when it comes to love interest, friendship, and family matters. And If you are a tennis sports buff and into martial arts who loves a competitive streak, you will be fascinated by how the author hits the hilarious scenes down to a T.
The book is an easy light read with a touch of nostalgia showing the readers how it was. The use of some jargon reflective of the era is so refreshing. The free-flowing conversation with some humor and amusing situation adds to a delightful reading experience. Moreover, an adventure of fun, action, and comedy awaits the readers with a little mishap of good and bad happenings expected to complete this simple, thought-absorbing, and enjoyable read.
One Groovy Summer is enthralling enough to bring the readers to an era of enlightenment and unrestrained ardor of intimacies in a rather fun fashion.
